Phase-change cooling vest
I ordered one of these. It's supposed to "freeze" at 56 degrees, and maintain that for about three hours.

My commute was pretty miserable last summer, and I hope to avoid heat stroke with this thing. I'll report on its efficacy when I've tried it out.

Let us know how well it works.
I have a backpad insert made with Outlast fabric which is also PCM. I never really noticed it doing alot, but it's obviously less surface area than a vest is.

I have one that freezes at about 70 degrees. I was not impressed. I am sure it keeps your core temp down because when I would take it off my torso was cool to the touch but I did not feel anymore comfortable. I have a Sahara vest with the polymer pellets that that you wet and it zips inside a Joe Rocket mesh jacket. You wet it down and it provides evaporative cooling.

It doesn't last as long as the phase change vest but I feel cooler.

I have been using a wet shirt under my mesh jacket for summer riding comfort. The only problem is that it only lasts for about 30 minutes or so. Long enough for my commute home after work.

I looked into the phase change cooling vest last year. Most of the reviews were not that good. There was one that said it lasted 3 hours, but the reviewers said that was only when you were sitting still. If you were on your bike traveling, it would last only about an hour.

I was also concerned about "refreezing" the vest since I don't travel with a cooler. So I opted out for just one that you use water with and let it soak in a plastic bag for about 5 minutes. It lasts for about an hour in the desert southwest with low humidities and high temps. However you do always have that wet t-shirt feeling (yuck!), but I did stay cool and was able to recharge it whenever I stopped for water.

The vests work much better if you aren't wearing a mesh jacket. You really shouldn't use mesh in anything but city or slow riding. At highway speeds the problem is your sweat evaporates too quickly and your body doesn't cool off properly.

The vests are less effective in the a more humid environment like around Houston, they are much more effective in the more arid regions. I found that with a mesh jacket the cotton t-shirt works better in the heat because they stay wet unlike the Underarmor type of shirts which evaporate the moisture away much quicker.

This isn't an evaporative cooling system. I considered that type, but in Houston in summer, it wouldn't be effective due to the high humidity.

The phase change stuff is kind of like the blue inserts in an ice chest. It's liquid until it gets down to about 56 degrees, when it turns semi-solid. It stays at that temp for up to 3 hours. Essentially, it's like wearing an ice chest wrapped around your chest, only it's not at freezing temperature, just cool.

At least that's what they claim. I'm gonna find out if it really works when it arrives and when this frigid weather fades into our normal steaming 8-month summer.

I have an evaporative cooling poncho called Mira-Cool that I bought from www.tuffrhino.com and it works amazingly well in Houston heat and humidty - even just standing around with it on.

One of the best pieces I have ever bought for warm weather riding.

I'm no expert, sure. I thought evaporative cooling wouldn't work in traffic at low speed. I'll report on my experience with this vest.

Evaporative cooling works at all speeds, it just works much better when the convection is forced rather than natural.

I sent the first one back; it froze to 32 degrees like a beer cooler. The new one arrived today, and I'll be trying it out as soon as this awful comfortable weather gets back to Houston's normal steamy heat.
